Proverbs 22:6 “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”
When the Bible talks about training our children, it is not talking about gaining skills and a giving a good performance. Training a child is about teaching him or her how to have a relationship with God.
We can discipline and train our children to be smart and clever and to do amazing things, but that will not ensure that they live fulfilled and happy lives.
We can teach and discipline our children to be good people. We can teach them to be kind and to share, or having good manners and to be thoughtful. We can teach them these things again and again (and knowing children, you will have to teach them again and again and again…). That will also not ensure that our children will be liked or live in the way that pleases God or others.
OR we can follow the Word of God and teach our children to know and love God; to obey and trust Him. From a place of accepting Jesus as their Saviour, children can be taught how to respect others (because God enables us to love our neighbours and our enemies). Children can be taught how to be kind (“Be merciful as your Father is merciful,” Luke 6:36). They can be taught to be good people because our children become better as a result of the Lord’s presence in their lives. It also requires discipline – but it produces a life worth living.
