Life is all about connection. These days we are most aware of connection in a technological sense – wifi, internet connection, battery power – we need to be plugged in!! Although this kind of connection is very powerful, and sometimes all-consuming, it is a poor substitute for the real kind of connection that we are human beings need.
We are designed for fellowship and connection, with each other and with God. 1 Corinthians 1:9 states “God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” We were created for fellowship with God. He walked in the garden with Adam and Eve; He spent time, sat and chose names of the animals with Adam. He asked Adam “Why are you hiding?” after Adam sinned. We serve a relational God! He wants to be in relationship with us.
When we realise the value of real connectedness with others and God, we have more empathy with others. We can be kinder and more inclusive. Research has supported what God knew all along, people who value relationships and connection have lower levels of anxiety and depression. They tend to have higher levels of self-esteem, empathy, and better co-operation. Yet many shy away from connectedness – painful experiences or the uncertainty of people. Whatever the reason, it is worth persevering in connection: life is truly better when we are together!
Hebrews 10:24 – 25 “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another.”
